What is gras rifle?

The Gras rifle, officially known as the Fusil Modele 1874 (or Mle 1874), was a French military rifle used during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was named after its designer, Colonel Basile Gras.

The Gras rifle was a bolt-action, single-shot rifle chambered for the 11mm Gras cartridge. It was introduced into French service in 1874 and served as the standard infantry rifle of the French Army until it was replaced by the Lebel Model 1886 rifle in 1886.

The Gras rifle saw combat during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and during other colonial conflicts in Africa and Southeast Asia. It was eventually phased out of frontline service but continued to be used by reserve and colonial troops for many years.

Overall, the Gras rifle was considered to be a reliable and robust weapon, although it was somewhat outdated by the time it was replaced by the Lebel rifle. It played an important role in the history of French military firearms and is still collected and studied by enthusiasts today.
